About the Event
Jacob Sheier is Governor General’s Award-winning poet and creative nonfiction writer from Toronto. He was a volunteer peer-facilitator of support groups for bereaved young adults for several years with Bereaved Families of Ontario. He then created a workshop course on writing creatively about grief, which he taught at Ryerson University’s continuing education program. I have since taught a workshop on grief and loss as well as illness and disability in a variety of locations and with numerous communities. I recently finished an MFA in creative nonfiction at The Ohio State University. He has published two full-length books of poetry and published several personal essays in literary magazines in Canada and the U.S.
Why we are offering a free workshop:
Jacob writes,
I’m offering this free workshop for a couple reasons. From my personal loss experience and working with bereaved people, I find the holidays can be challenging reminders of those we have lost. And I would like, in the spirit of giving, to offer my skills and experience as a writing teacher on this subject matter. It is also an opportunity for people to ‘try out’ a workshop with me as I make part of my living running creative writing workshops (I will not be pressuring anyone to take my workshops—I will just have the information available).
